Q. Normally I am far too busy to attend networking events but this one sounded particularly promising and I’ve managed to rearrange my diary. How do I make the most of this rare opportunity?

A. Go with a clear idea of how to introduce yourself and your organisation in a concise memorable way. Once you’re there don’t just spend your time hanging out with individuals you already know well; approach as many new people as possible. Find out their needs and let them get to know you better. The more you interact with others the more likely you are to make a connection to follow up.

Q. I want everyone to know I’ve just had an article published. In order to save time I plan to tout my success via email. Any thoughts?

A. Congratulations, having an article published is a networking coup. In principle, email is an efficient way to promote it. However, don’t just write a generic letter and send it to your entire address book. Bombard people with spam and they’ll press the delete button. To produce a more positive response, you must treat your recipients as individuals. That doesn’t mean a separate email for each person but you will need to create something personal and engaging. Address the recipient by name – no ‘Dear friends’, please. Don’t waste your own and other people’s time. Mail your message appropriately; only share your achievement with people you think it might interest.
